Algorithm for Monitoring Emissions Based on Actual Speed of Ships Participating in the Korean Vessel Speed Reduction Program

The vessel speed reduction program (VSRP) was first introduced in the Port of Los Angeles 2001 to improve air quality. In this study, an algorithm developed calculate ship emissions with a bottom-up approach based on activity using automatic identification system (AIS) data. target applied emission calculation participating Korea’s VSRP. Factors considered for were type, speed, gross tonnage, engine power, load, sulfur content fuel, and fuel consumption rate by age. is designed amount VSRP simultaneously calculating actual cruise when not results ships that participated 2020 revealed their reduced 47% carbon dioxide 71.9%. Our findings can be used monitor pollutant entering major ports Korea develop policies envisaged at reducing production effect greenhouse gases pollutants.
